About Us
Founded on April 23rd, 1983, the Grand Valley State University chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity has been thriving and growing for twenty-eight years. Founded with a few founding members, the chapter has grown to a chapter of 48 men from varying areas around the nation with a wide selection of interests and majors at Grand Valley.
Working with our national philanthropy, YouthAIDS, SigEp hosts a number of events throughout the year in an effort to raise both money and awareness. Hoops-4-Youth, an annual event that takes place during Family Weekend, is a three-on-three basketball tournament with the proceeds going directly to YouthAIDS. We have also begun a yearly event called Red Week, which is an entire week of philanthropy dedicated to YouthAIDS. Traditional events include Pie A SigEp, where students and faculty enjoy throwing pies in member's faces to raise money.
Along with YouthAIDS, SigEp also partners with the Sigma Kappa Sorority and Eyes Wide Open, the sexual assault awareness group, to host an annual concert that is free for all students and faculty members, Rock Against Rape, in an effort to bring more awareness to sexual assault and abuse within our community and nation. On top of having different bands and performers every year, the event also offers free food to students, and most importantly, information about sexual assault. Survivor stories, informational tables created by both students and the YWCA and Women's Center. This past year, Steve Connell, an award-winning Slam Poet that has performed for Oprah, Maya Angelou, and President Obama, headlined the event and is requesting to come back again!
The MI-Kappa chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is also sponsored by Monster Energy drink, with which the chapter won awards for with the most money raised on campus. SigEps also won Chapter of Excellence for the year 2007, showing that we hold all of our own ideals to the highest standards, to Grand Valley's ideals, and overall excellence. It had been many years ANY chapter on Grand Valley's campus has won Chapter of Excellence.
For the 2008 School Year, SigEp took home the Lighthouse Award and Coat of Arms Award; Highest G.P.A. for all Fraternities on campus both Winter '08 and Fall '08; highest New-Member G.P.A out of ALL Greek Organizations for Winter '08 as well.
With the dedication of the undergrad brothers along with the ever-constant help from the Alumni & Volunteer Corporation, the SigEps at Grand Valley continue to improve and grow!
